Price Drop On USDM Supra?

So with Doug having imported a R32 Skyline which was never sold here I had a thought. Once the MkVIV Supra hits the 25 year mark, will the USDM Supras drop in price? At least for a small amount of time?

Kinja'd!!!

I’m 20 years old and will graduate with my Engineering degree in early 2017. I’ve been thinking about what car I want to buy once I have a job and figured a Supra would be not only a great option, but a decent investment in the sense that if I wanted to get rid of it down the road it would appreciate a little bit. It would be nice if once JDM Supras hit the 25 year mark the price of Supras in the US dropped.

What do you guys think? Is that plausible? Did a similar thing happen with 300Zs?

Well, the Z32 never held its value well to begin with.

not really. Just made more of them available. Also, the RHD ones remained a little more expensive

(Source: in canada, where this happened 20 years ago :D)

I don't think the import eligibility of the JDM cars will affect the USDM prices. I think it will actually happen sort of the other way around. They're cheaper in Japan right now, but once eligible for import, the price in Japan will go up.

most people don't want to deal with rhd so id say no us cars are still gonna be more valuable because they were bought here have service history and owners here. importing a car is a huge risk and hassle for something they did sell here

Probably not. There's almost no difference between the JDM and USDM worthy of note beyond RHD, and the RHD version is harder to get. Like it or lump it, the Fast n Furious tax is here to stay.

interesting, I was thinking there would be an increased supply in America so the prices would drop a little bit.

I was thinking there would be an increased supply in America so the prices would drop a little bit, but you're right. I wonder how the Supras price would have been effected had it not been in the Fast and Furious (FYI the only Furious movie I've seen is 6, not the reason I'm interested in the Supra haha)

forgot about Canada having a 20 year rule, so that's how it happened there. Oh well, I guess by the time I could afford one in looking at 30-35kish for a stock example

The prices on Supras aren't just high because of F&F. They're high because they are both easy to modify cheaply, and can make ridiculous amounts of power with lots of money thrown at them.

So the people who want to buy them and throw ridiculous amounts of money at them, pay a premium to find examples that haven't been already screwed up by the people who have modified them cheaply.

15, not 20.

30-35? LOL. A good one will probably be closer to 40.

yeah I know that's not the sole reason. I know of a guy who just bought a anniversary edition where I live, bone stock, for 23k and now he's turning it into a drag car and it was practically mint condition (kind of a waste to me personally) granted he knows what he's doing, he's one of owners of the body shop I use

It's tough to say for sure...but for a lot of collectors, RHD is a big deal breaker, or they would just prefer LHD. I think that will keep demand up, and the prices of the LHD models higher. The deals will be on the RHD cars...and the real deals will be on the RHD cars that are not quite yet eligible for import.

That's a scenario that's played out time and again in Japan as different models become eligible for import to different countries. The price of R32's in Japan shoot up just before they are eligible to import to the US.

It will definitely make it harder to sell a USDM Supra when you can get a JDM one for less than half the price. People looking to buy a Supra will probably just get them from Japan, and those with USDM models will likely get stuck with them.

This has already happened in Canada, but USDM models still retain some of their value, as they have much higher asking prices than what you can get a JDM model for. Do they actually sell for those prices, though? I don't know, but I certainly wouldn't waste my money on one just for LHD. It's really hard to find a USDM Supra now, though, because the market has been saturated with the much cheaper JDM Supras.

And in case you're wondering, an NA Supra is about $10k while a TT is $18k.

NOW. not in 2017.

turn to R32 GT-Rs rather. in canada a good one is 15-20k atm.

Importing is a long and tedious process, and given that you can already get a good-as-what-japan-got Supra in US spec, only a few will go for it which will make for extremely small volume. Even in a world with no US spec Supra, Importers can never get enough volume to saturate the market since one only comes over after someone who's already paid for theirs sits lying in wait; supply perfectly meets demand 1-to-1 in this instance, so no net change in market pricing can occur.

A less optimal but still good option is to just put a 2JZ in the older model supra, or the celica hatch back when it was RWD. There has to be a ton of parts and aftermarket designed for doing exactly that.

Maybe a little bit. The Japanese market MK4 Supra was actually less powerful than the US version. A rare flip-flop of the norm.

Not a fucking chance. I'm in Canada where we already import the JDM MKIV Supra. A friend of mine just sold an absolute MINT JDM MKIV Twin Turbo Manual for 18K where a USDM in shitty condition will easily sell for twice that.

The USDM will ALWAYS be worth more. There is still a lot of people who don't want to bother with RHD.

Good for us that don't really give a damn as long as it's a Twin Turbo Supra.

I've seen JDM Twin Turbo MKIV's go anywere from 14K-22K

I believe you are absolutely correct. I'm in Canada where the MKIV's has been available for 7 years and I have yet to see a price drop.

The JDM's are still reasonable but the USDM haven't dropped a cent.

You should be able to get a JDM one for under 20K

Here is a few that recently sold in Canada they average around 16K for a real clean one probably around 20K

I know I’m quite late in this response but I wanted to provide some current insight to any interested parties. I’m currently the owner of a 93' JSPEC RZ (TT/6Spd) Supra here in Okinawa, Japan where I am stationed for US Military Service. The supra will be accompanying me to my return to the USA in mid 2018. I have personally seen the price of MKIV Supras (particularly TT/6Spd) triple in price here over the two years I have been in Japan, and this phenomenon is directly related to the MKIV’s nearing 25 year range. The current price range for a TT/6Spd here in Japan is in the mid twenties and is expected to continue to climb until reaching or surpassing US prices. I personally don’t see a decrease in US Spec price as JDM specs become eligible for import.
